Salvation and Security in the Spirit

Having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance.

–Ephesians 1:13–14

The Holy Spirit is instrumental in our salvation. Revelation 22:17 says, “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.”

The Holy Spirit invites every person to trust in Christ for salvation. But only those who are motivated and enlightened by the Holy Spirit can come to saving faith. Nobody will choose to do so on their own. As Romans 3:10–11 says, “There is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God.” Then how can anybody be saved? Only by the Holy Spirit convicting them of sin and drawing them to Christ. John 6:63 says, “It is the Spirit who gives life.” Nobody can come to God without the Holy Spirit’s work in their life.

Once you trust in Christ as your Savior, how do you know you’re eternally secure? How do you know God won’t change the terms of the deal? The Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13–14 says, “Having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance.”

The word translated as “pledge” refers to a down payment or earnest money. When you buy a house, you’re required to put down some money up front to show that you’re serious about completing the transaction. Let’s say the required down payment is 5 percent of the purchase price. That’s not an insignificant amount of money, but there might be a circumstance in which you walk away from the deal and forfeit your money–maybe you lose your job and can no longer buy the house, or you find a better deal. But let’s say the required down payment is 100 percent of the purchase price. Is there anything that would cause you to walk away from that deal after putting down 100 percent of the price? Not on your life.

When you trust in Christ as your Savior, God gives you 100 percent of Himself in the form of the Holy Spirit as a pledge of your eternal inheritance. Do you think He’s going to renege on that deal? Not on your life. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee that God is going to fulfill His promise to redeem your body and take you to be with Him forever. That’s how you know you are eternally secure.
