Renew Your Relationship with God

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
—James 1:5

There is a value to silence. Many of us have an addiction to being busy, to activity. The problem with that is our activity often keeps us from hearing the voice of God. You see, if we are His children, God is always speaking to us. The problem is that we are not always listening to Him. An intermission in life is a great time to stop and to start listening to the voice of God.

If you are in an intermission, spend some time alone with God to allow Him to speak to you. Here are three suggestions for what to do during your time alone with God.

First, during that time, allow God to speak to you through His Word. Whenever you are reading Scripture, you can know for sure that you are listening to the voice of God. God speaks through His Word. For example, Psalm 34 extols the faithfulness of God. Psalm 51 reminds us of the forgiveness of God, especially after a failure. And Romans 8 reminds us of the love of God from which we can never be separated.

During that time, I recommend you read from a good Christian book that emphasizes the character of God, such as A. W. Tozer’s “The Knowledge of the Holy,” J. Oswald Sanders’s “The Pursuit of the Holy,” or J. I. Packer’s “Knowing God.” Remember, during your intermission you’re trying to reconnect not with a set of ideas, but with a Person. Reading what these godly authors have discovered about God will encourage you.

Next, allow God to speak to your situation by asking Him specific questions, such as:

  1. What am I doing in my life that is displeasing to You?
  2. What do You want me to do that I’m not now doing? Is there anything You want me to start doing in my life that I am not now doing?
  3. Am I more interested in pleasing You or in pleasing others?
  4. Am I defining success and failure by Your standards or by other people’s standards?

Finally, remember the curtain will rise again. Your failure in your first act of life doesn’t have to be final. Your failure can be a comma, not a period, in your life story. You may be tempted to think that the heartbreaking death of a relationship, career, financial security, dream, or reputation means that your life story is over. But it isn’t.

The pause in your life story doesn’t have to be permanent. Instead, it can be a prelude to a great second act in your life.
