God Has a Plan for Your Life

Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord.
—Proverbs 20:24

I’m amazed at the number of Christians who want to argue with the idea that God has a master plan for every person. They rebel at the thought that God has a detailed plan that includes every part of our lives. They want to think God is a passive spectator, watching what we do, hoping we make the right choices, and then altering His plan according to what we do or do not do.

God’s plan for the universe extends to include every aspect of your life. In Psalm 139:16, David said, “Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.” Every part of your life is a part of God’s plan.

First, your external circumstances are a part of God’s plan. For example, think about the decisions of government leaders. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes.” The ruler’s heart is in God’s hand. God is bigger than every political leader, and He can work His purpose through that leader.

Second, the outcome of the rolled dice in Las Vegas, or the number on the lottery ticket that you buy at the gas station–those things are under God’s control as well. Proverbs 16:33 says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.”

Third, the change of seasons is in the hands of the Lord. God controls what happens to you in every stage of your life. All of those circumstances are a part of God’s plan for your life.

Not only does God control your external circumstances, but your physical and emotional makeup are also part of God’s plan for your life.

Even our choices are a part of God’s plan for our life. We want to think we are the ones who determine every decision that we make. But the Bible says, “Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord” (Proverbs 20:24). Every step we take, down to the most minute detail, is all a part of God’s plan.

Our choices are all part of God’s plan. In God’s book, He has already written every day that you will live (Psalm 139:16). The day of your birth and the day of your death are written in indelible ink in God’s book. Nobody comes into this world one second before God’s plan or leaves this world one second after God’s plan. Our lifespan is a part of God’s plan.
