Angels Protect Us From Harm

He will give His angels charge concerning you.
–Psalm 91:11

The Bible says angels are involved in protecting us from physical and spiritual harm. I like to think of angels as God’s AAA team: they come out and render service when we have tremendous need. How do they do that? To answer that question, let’s look at what angels do to protect us from physical danger.

Do you know what Satan’s strategy for your life is right now? The Bible says his number one desire is to end your life prematurely. If you are not yet a Christian, Satan wants to kill you before you have an opportunity to trust in Christ. If you are a believer, he wants the opportunity to extinguish your witness and influence for Jesus Christ.

John 8:44 says Satan is a murderer. Just look at what he tried to do to Jesus. In John 7:30 and 8:20, Jesus was confronted by angry mobs that were undoubtedly incited by Satan. If Satan had been successful in getting the mobs to kill Jesus, then Jesus would not have been able to go to the cross to die for our sins. But the mobs were prevented from laying their hands on Him. What prevented those mobs from harming Jesus? I believe His angels were protecting Him.

In Psalm 91:11, the psalmist says of Jesus, “He will give His angels charge concerning you.” And God’s Word says that His angels are doing the very same thing for you today. Angels are protecting you and me from physical danger–and especially from a premature death.

I will never forget the afternoon of my father’s funeral. The funeral director was driving us from the cemetery to our home. I was in the passenger seat; the rest of the family was in the back. A light rain was falling that afternoon as we pulled into the left turn lane of a busy intersection. The funeral director was looking at me, talking about the advantages of embalming. He did not notice that the green light was not a protected turn. He started to pull the hearse into oncoming traffic.

His head was turned toward me, but I was looking straight ahead. And I noticed barreling toward us on the rain-soaked streets a Cadillac Sedan DeVille. As I watched that car coming toward us, it was like everything went into slow motion. There was no possible way we would escape the impact of that fast-moving car–and I was going to feel it most of all, being in the passenger seat.

I remember thinking how ironic it was that I was going to die on the day of my father’s funeral. I braced myself as that car sped toward us–I knew we were not going to make it. The only way I can explain what happened next was that an angel pushed our car forward. We missed that speeding Cadillac by inches. To this day, we credit that to an angel. One ministry of angels is to protect us from premature death. God sends His angels to watch out for us and to guard over us.
