What to Say to Those Who Are Gay

From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.
—Mark 10:6-8

What does the Word of God have to say about homosexuality? We began looking at that last week, and we saw that God’s Word does not stutter or stammer. God’s Word is very clear. Homosexuality is a perversion, a twisting, a distortion of God’s plan for sexuality. Yet an increasing number of not just non-Christians but even Christians are embracing homosexuality as a viable lifestyle choice. Why is that? How can Christians afford to condone what God has clearly condemned?

Well the answer is many people, believers and unbelievers alike, have bought into several myths about homosexuality. Last time we looked at the myth that the only prohibitions against homosexuality are in the Old Testament and therefore not applicable today. But the New Testament has a great deal to say about homosexuality as well. Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 6, and 1 Timothy 1 are among the New Testament passages that speak against homosexuality.

Another myth we saw last week is that Jesus never condemned homosexuality. If Jesus never condemned homosexuality, then why should we speak against it? Now in Matthew 19, Jesus told us that God’s pattern for human sexuality is one man with one woman in a marriage relationship. And by teaching God’s standard, Jesus automatically condemned any deviation from that standard.

A reporter once asked me, “Why do you care if homosexuals want to get married?” The problem with same-sex marriage is this: anytime you counterfeit something, you devalue it. The reason the government doesn’t allow you to make your own currency is that if you make your own money, you make the real currency less valuable. And it’s the same thing with marriage. If we say to people, marriage is whatever you want it to be, then you have devalued marriage. If you say it doesn’t matter whether it’s a man or woman, or if it’s two men or two women, or one man with three women, marriage is whatever you want it to be, whatever floats your boat. When you do that, you devalue marriage.

Whenever you devalue marriage, you destroy the family. And when you destroy the family, it destabilizes society as a whole. That’s why we are against same-sex marriage—because of what it does to the value of marriage in general. God’s Word is clear. God’s Word says marriage is reserved for a man and a woman.
