What Jesus Is Doing Right Now

I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

–John 14:2–3

Forty days after Jesus’s resurrection, He gathered His disciples on the Mount of Olives and said to them, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Then He ascended into heaven. The disciples stood there gawking at the sky, so two angels told them, in essence, “Why are you standing around? Jesus is returning one day.”

We know what we’re supposed to be doing until Jesus comes again–we are to be His witnesses and make disciples. But what is Jesus doing in heaven right now?

First of all, Jesus is advocating our case before His Father. Hebrews 7:25 says, “He always lives to make intercession for them.” Right now, Jesus is intervening for us in heaven. John wrote, “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). The word translated as “Advocate” can refer to a lawyer. Jesus is our lawyer, arguing our case before God the Father.

Why do we need a lawyer? Because Satan is prosecuting us before God the Father. Revelation 12:10 describes Satan as “the accuser of our brethren . . . who accuses them before our God day and night.” Satan is not here on earth whispering lies and temptations into your ear–that’s the work of his demons. Instead, Satan is before God the Father, arguing that He ought to send us to hell. But we have an Advocate seated next to God the Father who is pleading our case, reminding the Father of what His Son accomplished on the cross on our behalf.

Second, Jesus is building a home for us in heaven. The final home for all believers will be the new heaven and earth. And the centerpiece of the re-created earth will be its massive capital city, the new Jerusalem. In Revelation 21:2, John wrote, “I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.” Right now, Jesus is preparing a place for us there. In John 14:2, He said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” Our home in the new Jerusalem will be the ultimate in prefab housing–it’s being built somewhere else by the greatest carpenter of all time. Jesus Christ is building an eternal home for us.
