Mighty God

His name will be called . . . Mighty God.
–Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6 tells us that the coming Messiah will called the “Mighty God.” It is a great mistake to believe that Jesus Christ came into existence at Bethlehem. The Bible tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1). Colossians 1 says that Jesus Christ was not just present at creation, but He is the origin of everything created. “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth” (v. 16). Bethlehem simply represented a change of address for Jesus for thirty-three years.

Let us never forget that this baby who was born in the feeding trough was not just any other baby; He was the Mighty God. When we worship Jesus, we are not worshipping some lesser form of God; we are worshipping God Himself. He is the Mighty God.

Let’s look at some passages about the Mighty God we all serve:

  • “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1).
  • “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth, who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens! . . . When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; what is man that You take thought of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty! You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1, 3-9).

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
