God Revealed His Attributes

If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

–2 Timothy 2:13

God has chosen to reveal Himself to us. So what does God want us to know about Him? For one thing, God has revealed His attributes. We call these traits His perfections because they are true of Him 100 percent of the time. Let me share ten divine attributes God has revealed.

  1. Holy. God is separate, a cut above everyone and everything else. He cannot tolerate sin.
  2. Just. God’s just nature demands punishment for sin. Exodus 34:7 says, “He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.” That’s why He took drastic action to save us, offering Jesus to take the punishment for our sins.
  3. Loving. God’s love for us is not a superficial emotion; it’s a profound, unconditional love that manifests in instruction, correction, and discipline.
  4. Eternal. God is not bound by time, so we can trust Him when He says, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
  5. Omnipotent. God is all-powerful. He can suspend the laws of nature to accomplish His purpose. However, God cannot do anything that is contrary to His nature. For example, God can’t lie (Titus 1:2), and He can’t be faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). Aren’t you glad there are some things God can’t do? But He has the power to do whatever is in His nature.
  6. Omniscient. God is all-knowing. He knows the future, and He knows your future because He is the one who planned it.
  7. Immanent. God is ever-present and working in His creation. He’s a hands-on manager.
  8. Transcendent. Even though God is in His creation, He is distinct from His creation.
  9. Sovereign. God is the boss. What God wants done gets done. Job 42:2 says, “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”
  10. Unchanging. God “is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Unlike many of our traits, such as hair color and personality, God’s attributes are unchanging.
