Christianity doesn’t offer just a set of rules to live by, but it actually changes the deepest desires of our heart. That is the difference between Christianity and every other religion, including Judaism. The writer of Hebrews tells us that the Old Testament or agreement based on the law could reveal the uncleanness of our hearts but never cleanse our hearts. The Law is like a mirror that reminds us that we are dirty but are powerless to do anything about it. But in the climatic conclusion to this section of Hebrews we see that Jesus Christ accomplish with one sacrifice what the Old Testament priests could not accomplish with many sacrifices: the elimination of our sin, the eradication of our guilt, and the transformation of our desires.
